I imagine everyone has found <http://www.be.com/> by now...

If not, take a look at the BeOS Ready list:
<http://www.be.com/products/freebeos/beosreadylist.html>

There's a section for x86 and PowerPC as well as respective FAQs.

Note that in the quote from the BeOS Bible it says:
"...all of the PCI based machines shipped by clone vendors (Power
Computing, Radius/Umax, Motorola, and Daystar) are supported by BeOS,
with the exception of a few miscellaneous models from Apple and the
earliest models from Power Computing."

Those earliest models are the 601 based PCI Macs (7200, PowerCurve).
Read the BeOS-Ready List for PowerPC to see particulars:
<http://www.be.com/support/guides/beosreadylist_ppc.html>

I quote from the BeOS for PowerPC FAQ:
"What would happen if I installed the BeOS on an unsupported MacOS
system?

First, you probably won't be able to install the BeOS onto such a
system. But even if you could, it wouldn't run. There is a lot of
engineering work between the BeOS and 601-based systems, and right now
if it would even start loading, it would crash immediately."

You should also note that if you plan to run BeOS along side MacOS 9,
you're going to have problems. BeOS_Launcher won't work w/ OS 9, nor
will the OS_Chooser extension (I can confirm this - it doesn't work).
Make yourself a boot disk w/ OS 8 or 7.6 and the OS_Chooser extension
for when you want to boot into BeOS.

But if you don't believe me, that's fine. I haven't tried it on the
7200 personally (only a 5400, 5500, 6500, 7300/G3, 1400 --didn't work
there, of course -- PTP200, and PTP200MP). Besides, BeOS should cost
you next to nothing these days... R5 is free for Intel. R5 pro and
BeIA are pay-for releases. (R5 Pro was supposed to be released for
PowerPC too, but I don't see any mention of it, though curiously the
BeIA info pages say it supports PowerPC in web appliances...
Hmmm...). Previous releases were hybrid PowerPC/x86 CDs. The same R4
or 4.5 CD can install on PowerPC and x86 - pick up an x86 disk
anywhere and it will work w/ your Mac. Since R5 is free, R4/4.5
should be dirt cheap anywhere you look. If they charge more than $10,
yell at them.

Finally, you should note that BeOS will be unsupported. Be was
recently bought by Palm, Inc. There are rumors of BeIA being
incorporated w/ PalmOS... We'll have to see about that. But in the
meantime, I have no idea if there is anyone at Be headquarters to
field Mac support questions. Mac support has languished in recent
times, even before the buyout.

Finally finally, have a blast with a great, efficient, and fast OS
that is fun to use. I just wish there were more apps. The only thing
I haven't tried yet is to run SheepShaver on my release... We'll see
how that works later ;-)

Peace,
Drew
