It's certainly NOT going to be faster! I have a Beige G3/266 MT, and although I have abandoned the use of it on this machine at home, I DO run OS 10.1 on my work machine which is a B&W G3/400. It was SUCH a dog at home, that I gave up and consigned myself to using it at work only. Plus, the non-native OS X apps are more important to me at home since I don't have the cash my work does to keep some of them at their most current versions.
I've been reading that the new OS 10.1 is a GREAT improvement (although, I'm not seeing that here at work, but that's another story) especially noticeable with the older machines like ours. I've still got the original 4 GB Hard Drive (mostly because OS X has issues with replacement drives in these early G3's). I've also got 768MB RAM, and a OrangeMicro USB/FireWire PCI Card installed, with a FireWire Maxtor 80 GB hard Drive and a Zip 100 attached. I've also got the "Personality Card" that came with my MT that I'm concerned will no longer be supported under OS X. My suggestion, is that if you're getting a new computer, shoot for a bit newer than the Beige models. I LOVE my Beige G3 MT, but it is getting to the point where I'm going to have to start sacrificing certain things in the future due to it's age, and I won't be able to keep up with all the new stuff! I WAS thinking about a ZIF upgrade, but then there's still certain thing I want to be able to do like video and things, but fear it really won't be feasible on such an old machine, even with the new chip.
