Run -- don't walk -- to this Web page:

        http://eshop.macsales.com/OSXCenter/

Ryan Rempel has put together some neato tools to make it a snap to
run X on a number of older, "non-supported" machines.

        I'm writing this message on an OSX (10.1) 7600 w/ 420MHz G3,
328MB RAM, and two monitors (motherboard + Voodoo3). It's groovy.

You actually don't need the G3 to run X, but, er, you'll be
much happier with a faster processor. I use a 500MHz DP G4 w/ 1.3GB
RAM running 10.1 at work... very tolerable, no complaints. ;)

The interface of X is a good deal different from Classic.
Give yourself a couple of weeks to kind of get the hang of things.
I've found that it's taken a good month or more to start to feel
really comfortable. Oh, I've also got some unix experience... which
comes in very handy. If you can find one decent native example of
each variety of app that you use regularly, you'll be quite happy.
The Eudora beta has been good to me, and the AIM client called Adium
is the first decent one for X (imho).
