My initial question was;

I think that both of your problems could be solved by  deleting the
"QuickTime JPEG Decoder" (maybe it's called something else, but it slipped
my mind) extension.

What I found was called " QuickTime JPEG Updater.   As soon as it was
removed fromthe extensions folder and the system was restarted the problems
went away.    Thank you Erik,  did you find this by experimentation or
knowing this could be a source of conflict ?    I assumed it was an
essential  file..
