Hey Kyle, Absolutely - I'm with you on that! I started to use Apples in 1980, IIe, IIgs, and then progressed to the Mac SE/30 and IIci (fantastic machine - still use it for my niece & nephews). I've been a faithful Power Mac 7300/200 user since 1997 and of all the Macs I've had (including my B&W G3 acquired in '99), the 7300 has been the most reliable machine I've ever used. The lack of video actually drew me to the machine as I knew I wasn't going to be doing heavy-duty graphics. As a result, it runs pretty fast (pumped up the amt of RAM & attached some large external SCSI hard drives) and is exceptionally quiet despite its age. I've run Auto-CAD and a host of other older graphics & math/stats programs without a hitch. It's a gem -- I won't part with it unless it burns up!
The only thing I wonder is whether I may need to clean it under the cover at some point. To be exact, it has been 4 years since the cover was lifted -- should I take it in to my University hardware service dept. & invest some $$ to get it "vacuumed" and "lubed" and otherwise "tuned up"? I'm afraid that it will come back as "different" -- you know how those things can happen in the tech shop. And I don't trust myself to do the cleaning (I'd zap it for sure with all the static in this apt.). And how long does the battery last? Although I use the machine daily, I sometimes wonder if it won't start up one of these days...(by the way, what happens to the data stored on the hard drive if the battery goes dead? anything or nothing?). Anyway, suffice it to say, the 7300 rocks big time in my books!! best wishes, Sue Street =-=-=-=-=-=-= Sue Street, MScOT(C), OT Reg.NS PhD Candidate & Sessional Lecturer School of Occupational Therapy Rm.310, Forrest Bldg.
