Relevance to the group? I have a 7600/132 with 304Mb of ram, running sys 8.6
with a powerlogix 375 or so Mhz card. I don't think I have hacked my system,
finder, or other important files, but I'm not positive. At any rate, I have
just experienced Finder out of memory warnings. After quitting a few
miscellaneous apps and stabilizing the system, the "About this Mac" reveals
the following info:

reported by finder/"About this computer"
used allocated by "get info" preferred size
AppDisk 1.7.4 33.3 MB 34,000 K
Internet Explorer 5.0 62.7 MB 33,493 K
MacOS 126.1 MB -NA
Netscape 4.73 38.1 MB 32,781 K
Outlook express 21.7 MB 22,088 K

I haven't had any weird memory grabbing apps running since I started the
machine. The really oddest thing, other than the huge OS memory print, is
that the memory used for the apps exceeds the memory allocated in the "get
info" window. AppDisk is set for 34,000k, "get info" reports on the AppDisk
as being 32.6 MB. Without doing the math, that looks about right for
bytes/bits.... Virtual memory is turned off.

Soooo.... I have IE set for a preferred size of 33,493 K, Netscape 4.73 set
at preferred size of 32781 K, and Outlook Express set at a preferred size of
22,088 K. IE is almost 2x the allocated size, and netscape is 5 or 6 megs
above the allocated size. The only other thing I am running that might have
any influence that I can think of is Snitch 2.6.5 I can tell you all the
extensions/CP I have loaded if you think it would help, but there is nothing
really weird and most of the stuff that is loaded at startup is fairly
common. The machine is not currently networked so Appletalk isn't loaded,
ethernet isn't used, dialup conection using freeppp 2.6.2....

Is this normal behavior for OS 8.6? I have noticed that IE 5.0 often tends
to run well for a while, then eventually slows down and grinds to a halt
and will freeze/crash, with a machine reboot the only remedy. If I had known
about this memory leak/grab I would have checked earlier, but this is the
first I've had the opportunity to analyze the problem as it develops.
Actually I am assuming that it is developing, because IE is running fine
right now. I figured that writing this and verifying the machine's behavior
was a better alternative than driving it over the edge.

Before anyone jumps on the browser-war bandwagon, IE 5.1 stinks and will
crash the machine quickly, usually within 15 minutes. I have used opera,
iCab, Netscape 6.x and Mozilla 0.9.8. They all have a lot of shortcomings in
that they crash the machine after crashing themselves within 5 minutes
(Mozilla), don't display 50%+ of the inline images- get a generic coffee cup
image... thank you iCab, or just aren't ready- opera. Netscape 4.73 is ok,
but it exhibits odd behavior when 5 or more windows are opened, like page
up/down/spacebar commands don't work, and other oddities of
non-responsiveness. Netscape 4.7.3 also has a lot of trouble with java
applets and apps... Unfortunately IE 5.0 is the most stable that I have
(regrettably!!!) found.

Any ideas? Confirmations? I have never before experienced an app exceeding
it's allocated memory, and I am puzzled. I've used macs from Sys 6-to the
present. I've run basic diagnostics with free techtool 1.2.1, Norton
Utilities 6.0, and Disk First Aid. No problems from TT, and only stuff like
bundle bits and date errors from Norton, so I don't think I have corrupt
drives. The only other thing I have that is unusual is that my machine will
sometimes fail ramometer ram tests, but not always. I guess that is weird
too. It doesn't really seem to matter what order I have everything placed,
or which modules I take out/leave in. I have 2-128MB, 2-16MB, and 2-8MB
modules, all arranged for interleaving. I doubt that all 6 are defective.

Thanks for any ideas, or for just being a sounding board. Also, I would
probably go to MacOS 9.x if I could, however I am really cash-strapped so
that is not an option for now. But, if you experienced problems like this
under 8.x that were fixed by upgrades to 9.x I'd like to hear about it.
