Hi, IIRC the 604 and 604e are rather different beasts, they might as well have been called differently.
Compared to the PPC604 the PPC604e had twice as much L1 cache (64K vs 32K) and one more integer unit, all this plus some more logic, like improved out of order execution, branch prediction. I am not sure if it also had more registers. Ah, those were the good times when an excellent computer magazine like Byte was still published, good tech articles in comprehensible language. I miss Byte very much. I might even be able to dig up the article ... The performance of a 180MHz 604e should be, theoretically, about 30% or so faster than a 180MHz 604 (180MHz as long as I know is the only overlapping speed at which both processor were produced: 604 from 120MHz to 180MHz, 604e from 180MHz to 250MHz, 604ev from 250MHz to 350MHz). I have a slight doubt about the processor in the 7300/166 and PowerTower166, was it a 604 or a 604e? So if you are offered a 180MHz card, you might want to get the 604e!
