All I definitely know about the ram is that it must be low profile, or it hits the swing out chassis tray- more specifically, the fan guard. I took mine off, and was able to fit standard height ram. Maybe someone else can elaborate on specs, but checking OWC's site reveals that they do sell PC100 dimms which are compatible w/ both models. The stock 24x cd rom is notorious for having problems. First, the fit and finish is crappy, and allows movement as much as 3/16" to either side, making it susceptible to excessive vibration. Next, the cd rom itself tends to go to sleep, causing the 'surges' you're observing. Its ability to idle itself when not being accessed was apparently added to reduce motor wear, at least that's what I've heard. . . . but I would think that the stopping/ starting causes MORE wear & tear? Mine stopped and ran so much that it became faulty, and eventually replaced it with a 32x, which is more refined IMHO. __C -- Chrys R.
