I had a similar problem with my 7600. I solved it by un-pluging and 
re-pluging the VRAM cards a couple of times--dirty contacts or bad seating,
  I think.

BTW. in my  7600,  the two VRAM cards have to be located  in alternate 
slots and NOT in adjacent slots. Check to see if this is  a requirement for 
your  8500
