I didn't get any reponses to my post a while back. Guess no one is running into this problem.
Just FYI for the archive. The problem was diagnosed by SCSI Probe as SCSI Error -7932, Sense (4). This is a report that the drive is "not ready" and so the drive is responding and can even be identified by drive setup software, but can't be mounted or reformatted or be reconized by DiskWarrior or TTPro. (Anubis and an old Silverlining utility actually report that the drive is "parked.") The error turns up most often with CD-ROMs mostly when using too fast a media, but it also shows up in reports on harddrives. It seems to have happened when someone tries to install OSX on that drive. In my case, if it's somehow connected to the OS or driver on the drive, it was the latest 9.1.
