A public carrier can avoid LOTS of hassles with customs on international shipments. And, Airborne, and others, really stick it to you on international shipments, perhaps because they have to pay extra for customs broker or agents service, which the public carrier would not be required to do. So, Veocity's seemingly outragrous charge for shipment to Australia may in fact be justified. But it was Velocity's policy decision to use a private carrier to the exclusion of the public carrier, and perhaps Velocity's contract with the private carrier actually prohibits Velocity from using the public carrier.
