I actually had something similar to this problem with an old 2x unit 
on my 81/110 a long time ago. If I had it set to a SCSI ID number, it 
showed up (in SCSI utilities, too) as a CDROM on that SCSI ID number 
and all higher numbers, e.g. SCSI ID ==0 meant I had seven CDROM 
drives (or so the computer thought)

I solved the problem by setting the SCSI ID to 6, foiling whatever 
bug was affecting it.
