My machine was being crazy unstable for a few days after I reinstalled OS 8.6 (after a serious problem caused by that stupid QuickTime JPEG Update), and I couldn't figure out why. I was praying it wasn't the memory I just shelled out $50 for, but the memory tested fine.
I pulled the 512K cache stick I had bought off the swap list several weeks back. What a world of difference! As far as I can tell, the instability is gone. I was also able to re-interleave my RAM, and even though Guage Pro shows that the RAM sticks aren't interleaving (i.e. still 64-bit data path), the data rate has nearly doubled (to around 40 MB/sec!). Still, I wonder, is it just that EDO RAM won't interleave? My old FPM RAM didn't interleave either in A4 & B4 if I can remember correctly. Should I try different slots? Since I dumped my cache stick, I would really like to get some interleaving going on. I can feel a *slight* slow down without the Cache installed, but stability comes first! Also, is there a utility for testing cache sticks? I'm pretty sure the stick itself is fine, it's just that 7500s are very picky about cache. Time to look for an Apple-branded stick I guess... -- --Chris PM 7500/604e 200Mhz 4 gig SCSI 256 megs OS 8.6 (This machine rocks!) -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
