Use SCSIProbe to see if the device is even seen by the computer:
<http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=3935&db=mac>

If it says no devices seen on the SCSI bus (except the host controller 
and hard drive), then you've probably got a bum scanner or a bum SCSI 
port.
