I'm not a techie, but I went through serial port heck when I hooked up my
first large Wacom (A serial port device) tablet and found something out
which may help you, or others.

I found that my US Robotics modem 3COM fax software installed a little
serial port monitor in the Apple Menu Folder which grabbed control of the
serial ports and locked the Wacom out. When I removed it, the problems went
away. I got a McNally serial port expander, that was problematic. Ultimately
I installed a PCI serial port expansion card. Things like FAX apps and Palm
Desktop can still cause me problems but I go right to their serial port
arbitrators, turn 'em off, and my printing or drawing snafus go away.
