Hello Douglas Hawkins , I think this arrangement will lock up one or both machines. I use to swap files between Mac and PC SCSI drives with a 25-pin AB switch -up until one the machines refused to start. I powered down and back up with the switching operation done in between. Some attention was paid to cable length but not much to termination and some other important SCSI issues, and not to forget to mention transient voltages, et al.
One day I bought one of those nifty little Xircom USB to SCSI adaptors. I didn't know if I could put both of my latest machines (two Macs) on the same usb bus; but I thought they could share a common external SCSI drive. Nope. One or the other Macs would lock up. With USB, you can hot swap, but I think it is best to leave the hard drive icon image on either desktop and use something like Adaptec's SCSI Probe to remount the drive when it is reconnected. With a PC running Windows 98, leave the "My Computer" window open or drag a shortcut of the mounted drive to the desktop -- to make it more Mac-Like ; ^ ). If I am not mistaken, the shortcut will remain a viable path if the drive remounts. Otherwise I think you will have to right-click on it, or its target, to re-map the drive--which will probably have a drive letter after "C, D or E." I think you can use ethernet to share printers cross-platform. I would do a search on USB networking, if I were you.
