Dear Joe:

PhoneNet was the first (okay, the second) networking system for the rest of
us, before Ethernet became the standard for personal computers.

To access PhoneNet, you need a PhoneNet adapter for each computer or device
(Laserwriter Printers, for instance). Cigarette pack size box with serial
in, 2 phone cable sockets out. Plug and daisy chain the phone cables
together in nearly any arrangement that works for you. You can even use
your house phone wiring to go room to room, but make sure the yellow wires
are all connected to yellow at the main phone connector box, and the black
wires are all connected to black. Your phones use only the red and green,
while the yellow and black are for spares. PhoneNet cleverly used the
spares for networking. Your clever phone technician probably left them
disconnected.

Then just set up the networked computers with AppleTalk and AppleShare.
PhoneNet works with nearly every grey or Beige Apple.

PhoneNet is only about 10% as fast as ethernet, subjectively about as fast
as a 56k modem connection. PhoneNet seems very slow for big file transfers
and Timbuktu, but it's okay for memos and the occasional small program
transfer. Go with Ethernet if you can.

Herb
