Fellow listers, any wisdom is welcome.

I've just acquired a 8600/300 with a MAXpowr G3 (400Mz). It rocks.
However, I'm having write problems (timing?) to an external Seagate 9
gig hard drive (brick) that I've been using with a 7200/90, without
any prior problems. The (apparent) damage so far has been custom
icons changing to speckled icons, at first, but now the affected
icons look like bar codes. I am getting alerts telling me the drive
is not functioning properly, during long-ish file transfers to it. A
surface scan reveals no bad blocks. Since it never gave me any
problems before, I'm at a loss as to what might be causing this while
attached to the 8600, and how to resolve it. The HD is being used for
back-up and storage, but now I'm concerned that it might not be very
reliable for that use.

Any suggestions?

9 gig Seagate on the external bus (FWB)
   OS 9.1
