I've braved CP/M, Dos, Netware, Windows and now, Linux, all the while being
told that Macs were the "user friendly" alternative. So, when my newly
acquired 7200/75's hard drive went south, I didn't hesitate for a moment
before diving in to swap it out for a new one myself. How hard could it
possibly be on the friendliest computer known to mankind?

Well, I'm here to tell you it may look "friendly", but it's far from
straight-forward! I acquired a new, non-machine specific Mac OS 8.1 CDRom,
an IBM 2gb SCSI and for good measure, a Seagate Barracuda 9gb SCSI drive as
well. Low and behold, *neither* drive is "supported" in my Mac and as far as
I can tell, there are no utilities on the CDRom to remedy the situation.

Would somebody care to enlighten a poor, wayfaring stranger? I gather there
must be some sort of low-level format or some such in non-friendly jargon
required, but I'm at a loss as to what such a utility might be called or
where to find it. My best guess was "drive set-up", but alas, that doesn't
seem to be all that is needed. I've had some commercial tools suggested. Are
there any freeware ones out there? At this point, I'm reticent to throw more
$$$ at this project.
