I have a PowerMac 8600/300 and an Epson Color Stylus 740 inkjet printer. After working fine for several months, the printer won`t print. The alert box says only that there is a "problem" with the printer, and I should make sure all the connections are correct and tight. I`ve done that. If I go to the Chooser, I find that the icon for my printer is clear. I select the icon, it goes dark, and the other half of the Chooser shows that the printer port is chosen. I close the Chooser, open it, and the icon is clear again---it has unchosen itself. The same if I select something to be printed. The System Profiler shows the driver:SC740, and the Driver version:5.50E, but the printer name and location are "not available". I`ve plugged the printer cable into the modem port, and the modem into the printer port. The modem works fine ; the printer not. About six months ago, the same thing happened, and I was advised to reverse the cable: put the printer end into the computer, the computer end into the printer. Lo and behold, it worked! I still don`t know why. This time swapping ends did nothing, so I bought a new cable. Still nothing.
