<< Are there any PCI ATA Mac cards that will read a HD pulled from a G4, or is the reinitialising with the card needed with all makes? >> All PCI UATA cards work in the same way. It is necessary to reinitialize a drive when you move it from the Mac's motherboard EIDE/UATA connector to a UATA card. Also, it is necessary to reinitialize the drive when you move it back from an UATA card to the Mac's motherboard EIDE/UATA connector. The data isn't actually changed, but certain hidden partitions are mucked with in order for the drive to be seen as EIDE/UATA connector-attached or UATA card-attached. "UATA card attached" really means SCSI, as all the UATA cards are simulating a SCSI card, and the drives which are attached are also simulated as SCSI. If someone would come up with a generalized way of adjusting the hidden partitions then it would be possible to move drives from one method of attachment to another ... without requiring this reinitialization. One good thing is once a drive has been reinitialized for one brand of UATA card, that drive will usually be accessible on a competitive brand of UATA card. This problem is perhaps moot on a 7300 as there is only one way an UATA drive can be used on this specific machine ... through an UATA card. However, on a Beige G3 or later, the problem of going back and forth between the motherboard's EIDE/UATA connector and the UATA card is a very real one. -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
