1. Go with 8.6. More stable, better features = easier & more fun to use. Especially love that movable, clickable finder bar, and remote access is mature and easy to program. Although Free PPP was a good alt for earlier system netdialing, RA just cleaned everything up once and for all.
2. On 1 gig, I wouldn't partition. A. Some programs require direct access to system files and will cross pollinate partitions from files or the programs themselves, defeating the idea of partitioning but more importantly, possibly testing your partition limits. B. The computer has no trouble keeping track of everything on a one gig drive. C. I assume all his programs will run off the same extension/control panel set? If not, then consider partitioning such a small drive to install different systems, but better would be to set up a general set that could run all or create sets that he could learn to switch with EM. I found that if the goal is to creat ease of use for non-power users, then rather than partition the drive itself, create distinct folders and position them graphically so that access is obvious. Place an alias of a "My Files" folder, for example, in the start up folder so that the user has immediate access of his files every startup. Set up the launcher with distinct categories that make sense to him. Get rid of all non-essential files, such as system docs and read me files that he might never care about. Teach him to use the help files, and select then preconfigure the memory allocations and preferences of all programs for speed and ease. In Explorer, for example, consider using 3 or 4, turn off the damn globe animation, restrict anim. gifs and/or sound and/or etc. and teach him how to dump the cache and selected cookies. My 2. Consign to trash as needed. ~R on 6/27/02 3:28 AM, Martin Srensen at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > Hi list; > > After my dad had an experience with MS virus-relay software, I > thought is was an idea to get him a Mac. > > Due to low budget, I am getting him a 7500/100/48MB/1GB which should > arrive today, I will probably get a 150MHz 604 card to speed things > up slightly. > > He is mainly going to use it for email and browsing, and I plan to > install OS 8.1, Eudora, a couple of browsers, AppleWorks 5 and > updated MRJ and QuickTime. > > I plan to partition the hd in 3: System, Applications and Files. > Any suggestions for partition size?
