Try running Apple's System Profiler and check the 'Devices' tab to see if USB is listed and if you mouse is listed under USB. Also, open the MouseWorks control panel and see what is shown (either you mouse will be shown or a no-mouse detected message.) I've used Logitech USB mice for several years and they work fine on my 9600.
