I don't own a 9600 yet so is a 8600 or something else a better candidate for problem free upgrades? >> An 8600 is the logical choice if you're doing A-V within the capabilities of the 8600's built-in A-V support (the 9600 has no built-in A-V support at all, and it includes a basic video card in place of the 8600's on-board video subsystem). The 9600 (and the quite similar 9500) both "feature" two PCI bus controllers. All other PCI Macs, except, perhaps, for the incredible Apple Network Servers (ANSes ... sometimes refered to as anuses). This "feature" leads directly to the six slot problem, for which XLR8 offers a new SSE (Six Slot Edition) zif upgrade, which is an improvement over its conventional zif upgrade. XLR8 has also implemented some improvements to its zifs so as to support multiple CPUs (MPs) the way they were supposed to be implemented (but Motorola and Apple failed in their attempts to properly implement the IBM's PPC guidelines for multiple PPCs).
