First download a piece of shareware called "Snitch," which, when installed, takes the
place of "Get Info."  The upper righthand panel of Snitch shows the Type and Creator
codes of the file on which you are getting the info.  For example, if you did a Get
Info on a SimpleText document, you'd find the Type and Creator codes to be "TEXT" and
"ttxt."  Looking up the Creator code in the Type/Creator DB, you'd find this entry:

File Name                        Crea   Type   Comments                      Category

SimpleText--Document   TEXT   ttxt     SimpleText/TeachText   Text File

"Snitch" is shareware and was written by Mitch Jones.  Take a look at his web site.
