Jon asked: >I'm running Mac OS 8.1 on a PowerMac 7600/132. Can I upgrade to OS >8.6? To do so, must I purchase a startup disk?
Hi Jon, What you need is an Apple OS 8.6 Installer CD or a burned copy of same. Your Hard Drive IS your present "Startup Disk" and all you need. Insert the CD and mount it (I.e., Icon showing on the desktop) Double click the CD and find the folder that has the Installation ReadMes and study them. You'll be advised to disable any active anti-virus programs as they may interrupt the installation process, and most importantly you'll be advised to go to your Extensions Manager and Choose the "Mac OS 8.1 (or 8) ALL" set of Extension/Control Panels. Restart your computer so that your Extension Manager selection takes effect. Then double click the OS 8.6 Install Icon, navigate through the windows, and choose "Easy Install". Cheers, Terry When you said "startup disk" you may have meant "Boot Disk" in the form of a CD with a bare bones System Folder on it. The OS 8.6 CD that you get, as well as being an Installer Disk" will also be a "Boot Disk". -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
