Benedetto, As it turns out, I subscribed to the PCC list as well. Someone there suggested the same thing, and to confirm my own suspicions, as it were, I pulled the battery and checked it w/ a voltmeter. Surprise! 3.6V! The battery is stamped for 2000, and I bought it in 2001. So the battery wasn't dead.
Someone else suggested pulling and reseating everything on the board. I did that, and presto. The Mac boots. One of the RAM DIMMs may have been seated improperly, but I haven't ruled out a bad _slot_ (yes, they can fail) as I replaced them in a different order. In any case, it boots now.
