I had written:

I had zapped the PRAM, but did it from restart; in fact I did not know that
there was any difference between that and shutdown!

Tim answered:

I've done this.  

John answered:
>Trash Finder Preferences, Chooser Preferences and AppleTalk Preferences,
>rebuild desktop and zap PRAM.

HURRAH!!!!!!! Something (?) or everything worked!!  The printer is up and
running.  This, after 3 days of struggle.  I don't know why I wait so long
to ask!
