So far, no problem.

If I put a "full" av panel from an 8500 in it I would expect it to be more
or less an 8500.

Precisely the same.

If, on the other hand I put a 7600 board in the case and a "full" av panel
from an 8500 in, would it be exactly the same as the 8500 with the "full"
av panel ...

You would get only those A-V functions specifically provided for by the
7500/7600 mobo's A-V circuitry; the two extra connectors on the "full A-V"
panel will not be used.

... or is there something on the 8500 board that would make it "better" than
the 7600 board?

Sure, there is an additional custom LSI soldered to the bottom of the 8500
mobo which is not present on the 7500/7600 mobo. It is this LSI which
provides the addional A-V function.

Also, I assume the a "partial" av panel from a 7600 put in the case and
plugged in to the 8500 board would function properly, just as it would if
plugged in to a 7600 board? >>

I believe it would.

Examination has shown that the "partial A-V" panel is simply the "full A-V"
panel, but with two connectors and some supporting filter components deleted.
