Either 8.1 or 8.6 would be excellent choices with this machine. HFS+ is 
a huge advantage: chopped down to the bare essentials, an explanation of 
HFS is that small files take up far less room, so you fill up your hard 
drive much slower than with HFS. The larger the disk the more space 
savings you will get.

On a HFS disk 1GB in size a simpletext document containing just 'Hello 
World' will take up 32K or more of disk space for just a few hundred 
bytes of content.

On an HFS+ disk this file will take up much less space.

I just created a document like that one on my PB540 (500 mb HFS disk). 
The file has 345 bytes of content and is 11K on disk, When I move that 
to another Mac (6GB disk with HFS+) it is 8K on disk.

This doesn't sound like much, but on an HFS disk that size it would 
likely be 64K or more.
