Putting the same size RAM in corresponding slots can actually cause problems if the
RAM sticks have differences other than size. I've had the experience of a computer not
working when a pair of same-size but different sticks were in corresponding slots, but
working when one of the sticks was moved to a different slot. It worked OK when the
sticks in corresponding slots were of different sizes.

IIRC, the computer was a UMAX S900, which is of the same general design electronically
as the 7300-9600 Macs -- excepting the handling of PCI slots, that is!

My guess is that, when sticks of the same size were paired, the computer "assumed"
they could be interleaved and froze when they couldn't.
