Derek, If the PCI slot is not currently filled with an add-on card, then add a USB card into it. This will allow you access to lots of modern printers and scanners.
If that is not an option, then a used Apple Color Stylewriter 2400 or 2500 printer might be a good choice for you. They were made for Apple by Canon, so the ink cartridges are readily available in office supply stores or over the internet. Have a look at: <http://www.info.apple.com/support/applespec.legacy/inkjet.html> For a scanner, your SCSI 25-pin connector on the back of the 5500 will accept many legacy devices. I use a UMax Super Vista S-12 color scanner that plugs right in and gives me the ability to use my printer-scanner combo as a copying machine. Very convenient at home!
