Removing the cartridge is not advisable either, as it has a vacuum seal and once you remove it, it may not work properly. The Epson seems to be a good printer when it is working but once it has problems, there is little you can do. At one time, one of the better points of the Epson was that generic cartridges were cheap, but now I'm hearing that generic cartridges can ruin the heads of an Epson. The cost of cartridges has really gotten out of hand I really don't know what printer I would buy next. I had the Apple 2400 ,which is a Canon, was about the worse printer I ever had. I suppose the Canon design is a compromise, as the tanks are less expensive than the HP's, but the cost of replacing the carriage is costly too. But at least you can replace the heads, unlike the Epson where you cannot, as they are built in. I guess those are the 3 options of ink jet designs. Lenmark has the HP type design where the heads are on the Cartridge.
