Can't help you with the cable modem question but, IMHO, you should
definitely go to 8.6 as it is the minimum required OS for most newer
hardware and many associated applications. I was initially hesitant
to move up from 8.1 because it had been such a stable OS on my 8500
but I have found 8.6 to be rock solid and many others on this list
have attested to that as well. 8.5 was very unstable so make sure you
install the 8.6 update if you are unable to install directly into
8.6.

The only problem I have ever had with 8.6 is an occasional lockup of
my GV 56K dial-up modem that seems associated with Remote Access or
PPP when I have both Eudora (email app) and IE open. I suspect my
modem software as this happens regularly on my 9500 running 8.1. So I
just do all my email and internet stuff on the 8500 w/ 8.6.

Anyone else experience lockups like this while connected with a GV
Teleport 56K 1.0.3 updated to 1.0.5?
