Too bad you can't see the XLR8 control panel that came with my card. It would visually answer your question. In lieu of that, The processor moves data back and forth between the Level 1 cache and the Backside cache a number of times in between the times it moves data to the motherboard. I would think you'd see more of a speedup in things that do calculations. Using your own question, (I can be pretty confident your 7600 didn't come with a 450Mhz processor) isn't your 7600 a lot faster than it was in it's stock configuration?
I must admit though, I wonder how much faster in real life, the 800 is than the 450, and whether it's worth the $300+. I'm only tempted by the fact that I can put the 450 in the 7600 I'm sending down to my Mom soon. On top of that (I have the MPe with only one 450) I'm wondering if a dual 800 for a PCI machine is in the works. The only other real speedup left for a non-AGP machine would be a raid setup with multiple 15,000rpm drives. Basically I've concluded that there will be no more upgading this machine after I get a video card. If we have a fixed bus speed of 45-50 Hz on a 7600 would a 800 MHz process really make a big difference? I mean it would be double my 450 MHz card but we are still talking about the data getting there at the same speed. So what would be the real benefit?
