Your computer actually likes rock music and is rebelling? ;-P

Actually it sounds like corrupted PRAM and/or a dying PRAM battery.
Start up the Mac holding down command-option-p-r (I need to use a pencil
in my teeth to get all of these) until you hear the startup chime three
times. Then release. It'll likely start up from Good ol' Wolfgang,
anyway, but now you should be able to set the start-up disk and have it
stay.

If that doesn't work, you can replace the PRAM battery.

Finally, it could be an obscure setting on the drives themselves. Some
SCSI drives have a start-up delay jumper setting, but I'd need to know
the manufacturer and model numbers of your drives to be sure.

If this probalem has gotten worse over time, then it's likely the PRAM
battery or PRAM. If it's always been this way (and there are no other
usual signs of batteries going, such as Losing the date and time or time
zone.) then it could be the drive.

I have a Seagate 4 gb drive that simply refuses to boot from a cold
start; restarts are ok, but it just won't boot. On the other hand it
won't mount at startup, either, though it will on a restart.

But this is a funky Compaq-rommed thing from a PC RAID tower, so
weirdness is to be expected.
