Hello!
After my last week try (when I got a LaserWriter 12/640 PS for $20) which
resulted in an unworking printer (it has sheet feeding troubles), I decided
to give luck another chance... and got a $15 LaserWriter Select 300. Yes, I
know... I will never learn ;-)!. But it was so tempting that I could not
resist.
So I took it home and powered it. It generated an odd smell... like rotten
fish (trust me!), coming from the fan. Luckily enough, it was just at the
beginning and then the smell went. I guess the printer was stored in a
humid environment for some time and it generated that odour... Anyway, I
connected it to my PB1400 as it was easier to do that connecting it to the
7500. Once selected in the chooser (and having disabled Appletalk), I sent
a test page, made in Word, to it.... nothing. No green led flash. No paper
out :-(. Another dead stone!
So I left it for some hours and went to work on my garden... this is always
refreshing and source of good repair ideas. Later I decided to give it
another try using the 7500 as my primary idea was to attach the printer to
it and use it as the print server for my Mac LAN. So I did it and tried to
print the desktop... what???. Green led is blinking!... paper is
feeding!... it works :-) :-)!!!!
I still don't know why I couldn't get it working with the PB1400 but with
the 7500 it did. Later I sent some graphics and they were printed also
fine. Good!
Now I would like to get your opinion about the LW Select 300... Is it a
good unit?. It seems barely used and, for $15, I can't lose too much. But I
am curious about what can I expect from it.
Regards from a happy camper,
JOSE
