No media is infallible. "Magneto-optical" technology
is said to be more reliable than CD-R and is what
publishers, for example, use for archiving (long-term
storage offsite of backup copies of their works).

I have a Fujitsu MO drive that I use for archiving
and I like it a lot. The removable media is said to
be good for 30 years...but as you point out in your
posting that may depend on conditions anyway.
And what if 30 years from now you no longer have a
drive that can read it??

The solution is to have a reasonable number of backups
of different kinds in a variety of locations.
