Look in your router's manual for 'NAT'. Stands for "Network Address Translation'", it means that your router is the only 'face' presented to the world, your computers are hidden behind it. Generally all the systems on the private side are given ip addresses in the 'non-routed' IP addresses, meaning no router will pass those out to the outside world; they're designated for private network use. That's what you want. Alas, a generalized description is not really useful, as it'll depend on your router...many have built-in webservers for configuration.
