When it turned out that the new ATA Maxtor 80 gig hard Drive I bought yesterday wouldn't work in my Sonnet-powered 800 Mhz G4 PCI Mac because the PCI-interface ATA133 card included with the card is NOT Mac-compatible, I figured I was beat. (Yes...this Tsunami-based PCI Mac has no ATA bus, just SCSI and PCI)
However...one man's loss is another man's gain, to coin a phrase. The drive will fit quite happily in my wife's Blue & White 450 Mhz where it now resides as two 40-gig partitions. I'm a hero. As for the Maxtor/Promise ATA133 card that came with the drive, I will wait til I hear back from Maxtor about my complaint about them putting the MacOS logo on a product that definitely won't work with Macs, and then probably sell it for whayt I can get for it on eBay. I paid $60.00 more (Canadian) for the Maxtor Kit than I could have paid for the same sized Western Digital 80-gig drive in order to get the PCI interface card, so I know I'll lose something on it, but I have the satisfaction of warning other potential Maxtor customers that the Maxtor Hard Drive Installation Kits with PCI interface card DO NOT WORK with Macintosh computers, in spite of the MacOS logo printed boldly on the box. >From what I have heard back from others on the List I do not expect any satisfaction, or even a reply, from Maxtor, but if I hear anything back from them I will update this thread for our general knowledge.
