I had the same problem a week or so ago; changed monitor, could not 
find the silly little bit of paper to change the resolution. I don't 
think you can really damage the monitor playing with the DIP 
switches... I would usually move a few, the Control Strip would let me 
change the resolution but on reboot it'd return to the old resolution.

Save yourself the agony and go get yourself a DIP-less adapter. They 
only cost AU$20.
