The problem your having gives me the indication that there is a cold solder joint on the circuit board of the monitor. As electronic boards age, sometimes because of the heating and cooling of the circuit boards, the solder pulls away from the leads of electronic parts. If you find someone with general electronics knowledge, they can look very closely and probably find one of the leads sticking through the bottom of the circuit board that shows a tiny circle around the lead. Just have them resolder it and it will be fixed. Make sure that it's someone that knows how to handle the dangerous voltages in the monitor, even when it's un-plugged.
