On my 7300>G3 running OS 8.6, I have almost completely eliminated
Type 2 & 3 errors by keeping down fragmentation on the HD. Besides
periodic de-fragmentation by means of Norton, I find the best effect
is from not using the HD for the browser cache files that are
voluminously generated when using the Web. Instead, I have
permanently set up a RAMdisk in the Memory control panel, and in the
browser Preferences (I use Netscape) I have specified the RAMdisk as
the cache destination. Then every time I shut down the computer, the
RAMdisk is automatically erased and all the cache files disappear and
the HD stays clean. This uses up some RAM, but nowadays RAM is
pretty cheap. A little at a time, I have increased RAM to 1 GB, and
I would increase it further if there were more slots; it makes my
computer so happy it purrs. --Art Sable.
