Yes, there is firmware (code for the processor) on one of the chips 
on the card.   This is used by the computer when you boot up to 
recognize the card and start pulling data off of the hard disk.   All 
ATA cards in Macs must have firmware for them to be used.   If you 
check SIIG's site, the have PCI-ATA separate cards for Windows and 
Macs.   In order for their 3-in-1 card's ATA side to work, it must be 
loaded with the Mac firmware.
