Second the vote of confidence for the original Apple 17" Multiscan.
This is the one with the same base and case as the Apple 16" Color
Display. The base has an ADB "hub" built in and jacks for speaker
and microphone extensions. It makes it very convenient to have your
computer on the floor and not stretch the heck out of your cables
reaching your work space.

However, while the 17" Multiscan was great in its day and for quite a
while thereafter, they're getting old now. I'd be cautious of them
just because most of them are probably near the end of their useful
lifetimes. Mine has developed a very occasional shimmy/wiggle that I
fear may become more frequent. At the same time my Radius
Intellicolor 20e has started spontaneously changing its color
temperature every now and then. Both of these are from
approximately the same era.

I hope prices on LCDs drop and I can afford to buy replacement LCDs
for these before they become unusable.

IIRC, the 1710 (and the 1705?) has a horrid reputation for dieing.
I may be misremembering, but I think a little deja-news searching in
comp.sys.mac.hardware or comp.sys.mac.hardware.video will turn up
some information. You may wish to search both news groups because
the former was not segmented into video, storage and misc. until
relatively recently (5, 6 years ago?).
