     AFAIK the screen res is set by the dot pitch of the monitor and 
varies quite alot over the huge range of models. On trinitrons (and 
shadow masks) the dot pitch is the measure across the rgb stripe or the 
width of a pixel in mm's and does not always relate precisely to an inch 
- thus the decimal place 'leftovers'. 
     My Formac has a dot pitch of .27mm giving a max screen res of - 
where's the calculator? - 94.074 ppi.
