An eMate 300 is cool, that's what it is! Seriously, though. Like
others have said, it's a notebook computer-style Newton originally
designed for schools. It's faster than all the other Newtons, save the
MP2000 and MP2100. It has a multi-user mode where several users can
share one eMate and have private documents in Works (roughly analogous
to Apple Works). It's insanely rugged, and (if the battery is in good
shape) will run for a god-awful amount of time on a charge. You will
need an AC adapter for it, though. You can usually pick these up on eBay
for $25 or less. Avoid adapters that aren't specifically designed for
the Newton, as people have fried their Newtons that way. Prefer the 9
watt adapter over the older 7.5 watt one, since it will charge your
eMate much faster.
Check out UNNA (http://www.unna.org), which is a huge Newton
software repository, as well as WikiWikiNewt
(http://guelph.unna.org/wikiwikinewt/), which has links to a bunch of
introductory information on Newtons. This Old Newt
(http://www.thisoldnewt.net/index2.html) is also a good source of info.
There is an active mailing list, NewtonTalk, for Newton owners. You can
subscribe online via http://www.newtontalk.net.
Hope that helps,
