I was concerned about this as well, having asked the list this question about a week ago. My 8600 has a G4 upgrade, Tempo Trio, Radeon card, a 4.3 SCSI in the top, a floppy, factory CD-Rom, CD-RW, Pioneer 105, a 1/2 height 18Gig SCSI in the bottom as well as a 30 Gig ata on the bottom. As long as the ribbon cables don't stop the fan in the side cover, which they do when I'm not careful, the G4 doesn't complain about overheating, which it does with the side cover off. I am convinced at this point that the factory fan/design is doing its job and no extra fan is necessary.
