AFAIK these macs will not record/play anything higher than 16bit
without an audio card - of course you can turn 16 bit into 24 bit but
nothing is gained in the way of capture - the info is just interpolated
like turning a 16 bit image into a 48 bit image - the higher resolution
is calculated from the lower and no new original data is involved - which
is why the higher res capture devices are more expensive and high end
digital audio hardware is an arm and a leg
As I understand it anyway - but my field is mostly digital imaging.
