I installed a new generic USB 1.1 PCI 2.1 to replace the more
expensive new USB 2.0 PCI 2.2 card that did not work in my 8500 (or
9500) and for good measure installed OS 9.1 on a brand new Maxtor HD
partition to see if the OS was part o the issue. No luck...initially,
until I realized that I had tried swapping my ATA/66 (which worked
both slots) and USB card in the lower two ports but never tried the
USB card in the top PCI port where my no-name (don't know the PCI
standard) firewire card was working. IT WORKED in the top slot with
OS 8.6 and 9.1! As I was slapping my forehead thinking I wasted
money on this second card, I put the USB 2.0 PCI 2.1 card in the
top slot and voila...! Uh, still didn't work. I don't know why the
slot made any difference but it did. It was not a seating issue, I
checked that too many times. As I suspected, a PCI 2.1 card will work
in a PCI 2.0 slot (one that it likes) but I have yet to have anyone
from this list or otherwise testify to a 2.2 PCI card working in a
PCI 2.0 slot.

On a side note: While I was inside the box , taking a suggestion from
Peter from last week about the jumper settings on my new IDE60 GB
Maxtor drive, I moved the jumper from the 'cable select' position to
the 'master' position. I started up the 8500 to find that my original
SCSI HD with all my applications and OS 8.6 was no longer mounted. I
went back to 'cable select' and life was good. Everything worked!
Like a thousand times before, I put the case back on only this time I
somehow managed to break the little plastic extension piece off that
goes back to the power button. Please see my "glue" post.
